Week One...DONE!

so I never thought I would miss the simplicity of sitting in a chair while professors blabbered on about anything and everything....but after this first week- I can safely say I miss it (somewhat!!!) Nah for real though- I do love fieldwork! Acute care is a completely different ballgame then what they prepare you for in school- but I think I'm finally getting the hang of it. But for those of you who know me well- transfers are coming back and kicking my butt...BIG TIME! I don't think I'll ever get used to all the lines and cords... on top of the fact that most of my pt's are Max A of 2 ppl....whew it's challenging. I'm also beginning to appreciate and understand how relatively normal I am...crazy how much exposure to reality you have just being in a hospital- I almost feel naive growing up where I did and not having a clue just how "different" some people's lives are. Anyways, I miss y'all terribly, simple things like southern hospitality and friendliness are scarce here in SLC. Everyone here is extremely nice- but it still seems to lack the charm of southern ways :/ Good luck on week 2!!!!

P.S. email me or post your email address for the account you use to view the blog...I can set it up for everyone to be "authors" instead of "followers" and then you can post like I've been doing

Rancho Rowdiness

Okay so day 2 & 3 have been such a whirlwind....I don't think any amount of school can do TBI patients justice until you experience first hand what it's like to be cursed at, flicked off and swung at by your patients. The staff have called this week "baptism by fire" for me this week. AWESOME! but for real, it makes it all worth it when you have a family member pull you to the side and thank you for what you are doing. One mom came to me earlier this week in tears and shock (son suffered TBI this weekend) and just exuded gratefulness for something as simple as getting her son to sit at the edge of bed and providing her education on how to help with him. Such a gift to do what we do! Hope y'all are doing great...good luck finishing out the week :)

p.s. if you know how others can post on the blog- not just comment....let me know! If not- no worries, please still post and keep us updated with life and FW

First Day Drama!

so first day in acute care was anything but dull to say the least. Throw yourself into a hospital in a large metropolitan area, around the holidays, in the snow and you got yourself a good hodge podge of crazy people- it's great!!!! today was the first day for many of the students in the hospital. we had two students faint in the MICU...apparently it happens a lot, so I felt good that I managed to stand on my own two feet. On a bad note, my CI and I almost pulled out a man's catheter during a transfer...YIKES!!!! hope y'all had a great first day...good luck tomorrow on day 2 :)
